PETALING JAYA: Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan has dismissed talk of warring factions within the party, saying Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi have frequent meetings to discuss issues.
Mohamad, also known as Tok Mat, said the top Umno leadership often held meetings to discuss party-related issues without publicising them, Sinar Harian reported.
“I didn’t even realise there were many camps,” he said in jest.
“People don’t know that I always meet with the party leaders. I can’t be posting on Facebook every day about meeting the prime minister,” he was quoted as saying.
“If people want to talk about camps, let them be. As long as we (Umno) aren’t swept away by such claims. We don’t have to dance according to their beat,” he said.
Political observers have recently speculated about Umno being split into three different camps, following a call by former Supreme Council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman in June urging Zahid to step down as Umno president.
The controversial MP claimed that Zahid made party decisions unilaterally, while members of the Supreme Council, Umno’s highest decision-making body, merely went along with Zahid’s decisions.
He also alleged that the majority of Umno division chiefs wanted Zahid to step down as president in 2020, and that a movement led by Mohamad to pressure Zahid into resigning had fizzled out.
