PETALING JAYA: Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) has accepted a request from its treasurer-general, Paul Yong, to go on garden leave following his recent conviction on a charge of raping his maid.

The party’s information chief Zakaria Abdul Hamid said Yong has requested not to be involved in any PBM-related activities until the conclusion of his appeal against conviction and sentence.

Yong, who is assemblyman for Tronoh and a former Perak state executive councillor, was sentenced to 13 years’ jail and two strokes of the rotan for raping his former maid in 2019.

The Ipoh High Court granted his request for the sentence to be stayed pending an appeal.

Zakaria said PBM will name a new Perak chief and treasurer-general in the near future to replace Yong.

PBM will hold its state-level annual general meeting (AGM) from Aug 15 to Aug 29, while divisional meetings will be held from tomorrow until Aug 14. The date for the national-level AGM will be announced later.
