PETALING JAYA: Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Yunos has proposed that finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz be nominated as Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Selangor menteri besar candidate for the next general election (GE15).
Jamal said it was high time BN and Umno’s top leadership choose a new, well-known candidate in an effort to recapture the state after defeats in the last three general elections.
He said it was crucial Umno did not discard young leaders such as Tengku Zafrul, whom he believed had a bright future in politics and the ability to garner the support of both Malay and non-Malay voters.
“Young Chinese voters will likely consider a candidate who knows how to manage the economy as many of them could be inheriting family businesses,” he told FMT, adding that Tengku Zafrul’s corporate financing and banking background works to his advantage.

Jamal said selecting Tengku Zafrul, whom he claims has been an Umno member since 1997, as the menteri besar candidate did not mean the party lacked young, prospective leaders in Selangor.
He cited Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan, Sungai Panjang assemblyman Imran Tamrin and Sungai Air Tawar assemblyman Rizam Ismail as evidence Umno had a good crop of young leaders.
It was previously reported that the finance ministry’s adoption of the Kuala Selangor district and Tengku Zafrul’s frequent visits to the area were clear signs he would be contesting the parliamentary seat on an Umno ticket in GE15.
