Skudai candidate J Kartiyaini says Johoreans deserve to know whether there is an undisclosed political understanding on the five available appointed positions

DAP’s J Kartiyaini said BN should clear the air and put the matter to rest if no such understanding with PAS exists.
JOHOR BAHRU: A Pakatan Harapan candidate has urged Barisan Nasional to disclose whether it has already allocated appointed assemblyman posts to PAS as part of a tacit political understanding for the Johor polls.
Skudai candidate J Kartiyaini cited recent remarks by Johor BN chief Onn Hafiz Ghazi that BN candidates who lose in the state polls will not be appointed as unelected assemblymen.
She questioned whether this meant BN had already reached an understanding with other parties on filling the five available posts after the July 11 state election.
“It is even more interesting that PAS is not fielding candidates in most constituencies.
“This naturally raises questions about whether there is some form of political understanding between BN and PAS, including the possibility of appointments as nominated assemblymen should BN form the government,” she told reporters here.
Kartiyaini, of DAP, said Johoreans have the right to know whether such a political agreement was reached behind closed doors.
BN should clear the air and put the matter to rest if no such understanding exists, she added.
“Transparent politics should leave no room for speculation. The best way to put this matter to rest is to provide a clear explanation to the people.”
Last week, Onn Hafiz said BN candidates who fail to be elected as assemblymen at the polls will not obtain “backdoor” appointments and they must accept the decision of voters wholeheartedly.
The Johor state assembly passed a constitutional amendment bill on May 7 allowing for the appointment of five unelected assemblymen, increasing the total number of state representatives to 61.
Johor is the fourth state to have appointed assemblymen, after Sabah, Terengganu and Pahang.
