PH’s Hassan Karim said those caught mixing local and imported rice should be charged like drug offenders.

KUALA LUMPUR
A backbencher has proposed that the mixing of local and imported rice be made a criminal offence to prevent such unscrupulous practices.

Hassan Karim (PH-Pasir Gudang) said some parties were mixing local and imported rice to reap profits, resulting in consumers paying a lot more for the commodity.

He said the Control of Padi and Rice Act should be amended to criminalise such practices.

“There might be some difficulty in telling local and imported rice apart, so the burden of proof must be looked into by the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

“Those charged in court must defend themselves similar to those who are charged with drug offences,” he said during the debate on the royal address in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Hassan lamented that no one has been charged with such offences.

“The existing law lacks bite and some quarters have profited from it,” he said.

In October, it was reported that the agriculture and food security ministry was coming up with a new regulation to curb such manipulation.
