PAS Youth vice-chief Muhammad Hanif Jamaluddin has questioned the government’s action to lift the ban on former DAP activist Hew Kuan Yau’s comic book titled “Belt and Road Initiative for Win-Winism”.
According to Harakah Daily, Hanif was among those who questioned the public letter on the banning revocation of the comic book said to have been issued on Aug 12 by the Home Ministry.
“What happened to Madani Malaysia?
“Where are the voices of the Umno grassroots who love and cherish the party’s struggle?” he said in a statement on social media, attacking a book that was said to have touted the value of communism and mocked former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Subang PAS chief Roslan Shahir Mohd Shahir also weighed in on the matter, saying that Umno used to protest strongly and demand that the comic be banned.

According to Roslan, then Umno vice-president Mahdzir Khalid brought a motion to Parliament to ban the book, but it was rejected by the speaker.
“This comic is not only controversial because it promotes the struggle for communism, but former Umno president Najib and his wife are also mocked and ridiculed in it.
“Now the ministry has revoked the ban on this comic and it can now be distributed.
“So how, Umno? Speak up, or does DAP have the most teeth in the government of Pakatan Harapan and BN today?” said Roslan on his social media.
Book ban
Hew’s book was released to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Malaysia.
In 2019, The Home Ministry enforced a ban on the comic under Section 7(1) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984.
Section 7(1) states that the home minister can prohibit any publication if he is satisfied that it contains material that is likely to be prejudicial to public order, morality, security, public interest, or national interest or is likely to alarm public opinion.

“The publication’s content, among others, tries to promote communism and socialism ideologies, disseminate erroneous and confusing facts about communism, and contains elements that promote support and sympathy for the communist struggle.
“It also creates doubts among the young generation about Malaysia’s history and disputes the efforts and struggle of past national leaders for independence and development of the country.
“The content of the publication appears to not take into account the sensitivities of a multiracial and multireligious Malaysia and could break the harmony and unity of its people,” it added.

I see Red hidden hands behind the decision to raise the ban, too...
