PETALING JAYA – Clad in traditional Indian costumes, students and teachers of SJK(C) Simpang Pertang in Jelebu, Negri Sembilan recently got together to celebrate Deepavali.

This is despite there being only five Indian students in the school.

According to the school’s Facebook page, headmistress Li Ming Zhu said this was the second year the school was celebrating Deepavali.

“We learnt a lot after organising the celebration last year.

“We also had an Indian costume competition this year, with Indian songs and music to add to the festive cheer,” she said.

The school’s parent-teacher association also helped with a colour “kolam” and decorations.

Students also performed traditional Indian dances on stage.

“We want to celebrate all the festivities in the country to help our pupils better understand and appreciate all the different cultures and to respect each other,” added Li. – The Vibes, November 11, 2023

  1. Most small town Chinese communities in Malaysia are being hollowed out, with declining population's caused by a combination low birthrates and exodus to urban areas.
    Mostly old folks left.
