“What else about Anwar are you dissatisfied with?” Kamil Munim asks Tun M

“WHAT else about Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim are you dissatisfied with? Aren’t the decades of suffering experienced by YAB PMX enough?”

Such is the question that has been posed by political secretary to the finance minister Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim to former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad following the latter’s interview in the latest episode of the Keluar Sekejap podcast earlier this week.

Kamil was responding to Dr Mahathir’s statement that Anwar had turned out worse than the very people he wanted to reform.

“What is exasperating is the fact that [Dr Mahathir] himself had resigned (as prime minister in 2020) and Dr Mahathir was the one who did not keep his promise to hand over the premiership to Anwar, but yet he is also the one who was hurt (in the outcome),” Kamil said in a social media posting recently.

He was referring to how Dr Mahathir had reneged on his word to hand over the premiership to the PKR president in May 2020 after serving two years as the country’s 7th prime minister from May 9, 2018.

Kamil said he will, however, treat Dr Mahathir’s comment on Anwar as a form of regret as it was unpleasant to dredge up what the elderly statesman had previously done to several of the country’s former prime ministers.

“Not to forget is the suffering experienced by former PAS leaders who have left us. Perhaps PAS has forgotten the late PAS president Datuk Fadzil Noor’s comment about how Dr Mahathir will live long enough to witness the destruction he has caused,” Kamil remarked.

However, Kamil pointed out that he had no intention of reprimanding the 98-year-old veteran politician and that his post was simply a young leader’s way of trying to learn from the country’s “colourful” politics.

“It’s unbecoming if a nearly-100-years-old former leader who has served the country be criticised by a young leader such as myself,” he said.

“Dr Mahathir should ‘move on’ and give his views as a statesman and not bring up personal issues between himself and the country’s current leader whom he (Dr Mahathir), too, had once supported.

“If an older person expresses his inappropriate criticism about something, there is no point in correcting his views. That’s how it is with the elderly who is unknowingly expressing regret for what he has done. We simply just say yes and move forward.” – Nov 16, 2023
