MP nominates Ambiga to be new EC chairperson

PARLIAMENT | A lawmaker has suggested the government appoint former Bersih chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan to spearhead the Election Commission (EC).

Khoo Poay Tiong (Pakatan Harapan-Kota Melaka) told the Dewan Rakyat today that Ambiga (above) should replace EC chairperson Abdul Ghani Salleh when he retires.

“We have been informed that the EC chairperson will retire in several months, specifically by May next year.

“How will the coalition government appoint a new EC chairperson? Will it be through the Parliamentary Select Committee or can we suggest names?

“(After all,) the EC chairperson plays a major role in election reforms,” he said, before making his own suggestion.

Malaysiakini understands that Ghani is set to retire on May 10, 2024.

Ambiga is a prominent human rights lawyer, and advocate, as well as a former Bar Council president from 2007 to 2009.

She was also the driving force behind Bersih 2.0 in 2011.

Ambiga is on the executive committee of the Women's Aid Organisation and also part of the Bar Council Special Committee on the rights of the Orang Asli.

Meanwhile, among the election reforms that Khoo raised included fair re-delineation of electoral boundaries and regular training of election officers.

He also called on the EC to consider online voting in lieu of postal votes.

  1. The Race and Religion Warriors will absolutely oppose Ambiga.
And , as all should know by now, the R&R Champions have veto rights over all.
