MCKK parent-teacher group slams bully victim’s family for taking case online

This after victim’s relative questions ‘light’ punishment of alleged perpetrators

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) Parent-Teacher Association has lashed out at the family of a Form 4 bullying victim for “inconsiderately and selfishly” taking the issue to social media.

In a statement today, the PTA said that by posting details of the case online, the family had smeared the good name of MCKK, a prestigious fully residential school in Perak.

“The MCKK PTA regrets the inconsiderate and selfish decision by the (victim’s) family to spread the case (details) online,” the association said.

“We are confident that the case has taught a lesson to parents to not interfere in school administrative matters while trusting and keeping an open mind to decisions made by MCKK’s management.

“Any calls by the school authorities and the headmaster are purely for the sake of MCKK students’ welfare and success in the future.”

The PTA also said that it “respects” the school’s decision to not “bow down to threats” allegedly issued by a group of Form 4 students’ parents who said they would post about the case online if MCKK refuses to reconsider its supposed lack of disciplinary action against those involved.

“We condemn the parents’ attempt to interfere in the school’s management. The school’s decision must be respected since the well-being of all parties has been considered.

“The school has also adhered to necessary procedure in making its decision, (which) was made transparently without any interference from any parties.”

The statement comes amid online outcry after an individual, believed to be the victim’s sister, vented her frustrations on Instagram, claiming that the perpetrators had only received “light punishment” and questioned if the families had ties with VIPs.

The claims were made in a post by user @okpastu, who said that the Form 5 students who allegedly committed the assault were allowed to continue going to school as usual and were only punished with three lashes of the cane as well as community service.

The post also featured screenshots of a letter by the victim’s parents calling on the school to reconsider the punishment as it was considered disproportionate to the bullies’ actions, which reportedly occurred in September.

According to the victim’s sister, the incident saw the victim being “rugby tackled” by his senior, causing injuries to his private parts. He was then continuously punched and kicked before passing out.

On November 4, Kuala Kangsar police chief Omar Bakhtiar Yaacob confirmed that police had launched an investigation into a bullying case at a boarding school in Kuala Kangsar after a police report was lodged on September 24.

Omar said the case was being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

The PTA, meanwhile, also said it had received reports of a student being yelled at and chased out of an eatery in Kuala Kangsar after the student was labelled as a “bully.”

As such, the association suggested that MCKK students should not be allowed to leave school premises by themselves until the issue has been resolved.

Besides noting that students should adhere to the school’s motto of “Fiat Sapientia Virtus” (Manliness Through Wisdom) by not engaging with “provocations or attacks” from outsiders, the PTA also said that students should lodge police reports if they are involved in such instances. – November 5, 2023
