KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 — Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) has decided to suspend Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid.

This comes after the Opposition parliamentarian declared his support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last month.

In a statement today, Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said the four-year suspension came into effect yesterday (November 3) and covered both Iskandar Dzulkarnain’s party membership as well as any positions held.

Hamzah also said the Bersatu disciplinary committee, which convened yesterday to discuss Iskandar Dzulkarnain’s breach of party discipline and its constitution, had acted based on Article 22.1 (f) of the party’s constitution.

“After a meticulous review of all documentary evidence, the severity of the offence, the implications, and the explanation provided by YB Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid, the Bersatu disciplinary committee found him in contravention of Article 22.1 (f) of the Bersatu constitution.

“As a consequence, YB Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain’s party membership and all positions held have been suspended for four years, from the decision date, which was November 3, 2023,” the statement read.

On October 12, Iskandar Dzulkarnain declared his support for the prime minister by stating that the move was to ease the burden faced by his constituents over the rising cost of living.

Iskandar Dzulkarnain claimed that the prime minister had said allocations would be channelled to lawmakers who support the unity government’s policies.

Despite facing the risk of disciplinary action from his party, Kuala Kangsar lawmaker said he could no longer stand to see his constituency being left behind and neglected due to political differences.
