Postings on social media show sympathy for the employee whose sacking is seen as a case of unfair dismissal and religious discrimination.

PETALING JAYA: Social media users have criticised a Chinese Muslim eatery in Kuala Lumpur for sacking an employee after a video of the man wearing a cross at work went viral.
Postings on X, formerly Twitter, showed sympathy for the worker, who is seen in the video clip preparing the restaurant’s crispy beef-filled roti.
One posting by “Nina’s Nazri” said the decision to sack the employee was not right. “Wearing a cross has no bearing on the halal status of the food served,” he wrote.
Another posting quoted a Quranic verse that read: “To you your religion, to me mine”.
One “Rose Nor” questioned why the employee was given the boot if he did not breach any rules in terms of preparing food and causing people to fall ill or suffer food poisoning. “As the employer, you can always advise him to cover up. Please don’t ill-treat people,” Rose Nor said.
Another identified as “Malay Bitcoiner” said there was nothing wrong with the former employee being a non-Muslim. “I pity him. This is just terrible.”
One Manjit Singh meanwhile said the man can sue his former employer for religious discrimination, while others said this was a case of unfair dismissal.
The manager of the restaurant, Mon Chinese Beef Roti, was quoted by Berita Harian earlier today as saying that the employee had been sacked after they found out about the viral video.

The manager, identified only as Sofia, apologised to those who were offended by the sight of the man wearing the cross and who were uneasy after watching the video.
She was quoted as saying that the restaurant’s five other employees were all Chinese Muslims, four of whom are from China.
An employee wearing a Salib apparently renders the restaurant Non-Halal.
