The Star:
Odd that Kedah MB apologised despite denying wrongdoing, says S’gor MB
PETALING JAYA: It is odd that Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor made a public apology despite denying any wrongdoing on his remarks about the Selangor Sultan, says caretaker Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
"He (Muhammad Sanusi) apologised despite saying that he’s not that wrong. That is very weird. But that is okay, the police are currently investigating the issue," said Amiruddin to reporters after attending a PKR youth event at PJ Live Arts on Saturday (July 15) afternoon.
Amirudin said the entire issue should be a reminder to all politicians - including himself - to not play up issues pertaining to race, religion and royalty (3R).
"This is a good lesson and I hope in future, election candidates will not raise these issues. Let us debate about facts, data and how to develop the country and state in the coming state polls," said Amirudin.
He added that the police should be given the space to complete their investigations.
On Saturday (July 15) morning, Muhammad Sanusi apologised to Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, but claimed that his statements were "spun" in an attempt to defame him.
Police reports were lodged by PKR members and the Royal Council of Selangor against Muhammad Sanusi over allegations that he insulted the Selangor Ruler.
Meanwhile, de-facto law minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said has said that an apology does not amount to legal defence and politicians must be more mindful of their speeches given its influence to the public.
