“Kedah not a PAS-dominant state, can be wrested back,” says UMNO man

AN UMNO leader has expressed confidence that Barisan Nasional (BN) can take back Kedah from PAS as Kedah is not a state where PAS is dominant like in Kelantan.

According to Kedah UMNO chief Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, voting patterns in the northern state could not be compared with those in the east coast state, especially Kelantan where PAS has enjoyed strong support for decades.

“Kedah used to be a BN stronghold and PAS has won and lost (the state) before. It’s not a state where PAS is dominant, like in Kelantan,” FMT quoted Mahdzir as saying.

The former Kedah menteri besar said BN, of which UMNO is a component, will propose candidates for the Kedah state polls once discussions on seat allocations among parties of the coalition government are finalised.

He further mentioned that the discussions have been positive, and that Kedah BN is finalising the names of the candidates before they are submitted to the coalition’s leadership for final approval.

When quizzed about Kedah menteri besar Datuk Seri Muhamad Sanusi Md Noor’s comment that BN no longer has “warlords” in the state and lacks the machinery to contest successfully, Mahdzir was quick to dismiss the remark, adding that the PAS leader is “in his own world” and that the coalition is unaffected by such comments.

Six states – Pakatan Harapan-led Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Penang, as well as PAS-controlled Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu – are expected to hold their state polls after June. – May 10, 2023
