Hadi wants a dominant role if PAS joins the unity government
WHILE claiming that “certain people” had frequently sought him to join Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s unity government, PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang stated that PAS will only join a government where it has a dominant role.
It’s all about statistics for Hadi, which reminds us of Hadi’s famous ‘Jumlah sudah cukup’ (numbers are enough) remark on election night in November 2022.
The Perikatan Nasional (PN) deputy chairman made it clear that any offer to join the government should see PAS given a dominant role.
He said that of all parties in Parliament, PAS had the most parliamentary seats.
“PAS has 43 seats (and all its MPs are Malay Muslims). PKR only has 30, with nine MPs being non-Malays and only 19 being Muslims. On the other hand, of the DAP’s 40 seats, 37 of the MPs are non-Malays,” the Marang MP pointed out.
“They want to invite PAS, but PAS would be taking a backseat.”
While he did not reject the offer totally, he imposed his condition, which is to become the main party in a coalition government, which will surely be rejected by the Anwar government.
The PAS under Hadi is seen as extreme, however he claimed that certain people contacted him.
“They kept wanting to meet me about an offer to join the government,” Hadi told reporters at a press conference at the World Trade Centre.
On the other hand, Hadi also noted that there is a surge of former UMNO members flocking to his party, with the anticipation of even more figures joining in the near future. He is not sure how many new members there are exactly.
“I can’t (tell the number) but we already have them (former UMNO members) joining us. We have people like Datuk Seri Ismail Muttalib. We’ve got Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim.” – May 28, 2023
