PKR man hits out at Azmin for taking a break from politics

PKR deputy information chief Razeef Rakimin said Azmin Ali must continue to serve the people of Bukit Antarabangsa until the end of his term.

PETALING JAYA: PKR deputy information chief Razeef Rakimin has called out Azmin Ali for wanting to take a break from politics, reminding the latter that he still has a duty to serve his constituents in Bukit Antarabangsa.

While Bersatu Supreme Council member Azmin failed to defend his Gombak parliamentary seat in the last general election (GE15), he remains the Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman, a Selangor state seat he won at the 14th general election (GE14) in May 2018.

“As an elected representative, the decision to rest can only be made when deciding not to contest in an election,” Razeef said in a statement.

“As long as he (Azmin) is an elected representative, it is his duty to continue serving the people until the end of his term.”

Calling Azmin’s announcement “irresponsible”, Razeef said the former international trade and industry minister would surely continue to receive his allowance as an assemblyman despite taking a break from politics.

In a surprise tweet yesterday, Azmin announced a “momentary pause in my public service career”, saying he needed to go “back to the drawing board” on his future.

A former Selangor menteri besar, Azmin, played a prominent role in the Sheraton Move that resulted in the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government in February 2020.

The former Gombak MP led a group of PKR lawmakers who shifted their allegiance to Bersatu, which had quit PH and formed an alliance with Barisan Nasional (BN) and PAS to form a new government with Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister.

It was previously reported that Azmin would come back with a vengeance in the state polls to avenge his parliamentary defeat in GE15 by current Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari.

He was also widely tipped to be PN’s candidate for the post of menteri besar, should they win at the state election which is due to be held this year.
