KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 — Datuk Mohd Nazifuddin Najib, the son of former prime minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak, will contest for the Langkawi Umno division chief post in the party’s election.

However, he will still remain in the running for the Umno Youth vice chief post that was previously announced.

Utusan Malaysia reported last night that Mohd Nazifuddin, or popularly called Nazif, has sent his nomination form for the position of Langkawi Umno division chief.

“The entry by Mohd Nazifuddin, who is only 40 years old, is taken as a positive development for the Umno division in facing the coming state election.

“He is seen as a young man who inherited his father’s wisdom and calmness. That itself is a strong factor to enable Mohd Nazifuddin to lead the Langkawi Umno division.

“So far, the feedback received has been positive,” said the source who is close to Mohd Nazifuddin in Alor Setar, Kedah yesterday.

The Langkawi Umno division chief’s post has been left vacant following the death of its incumbent Datuk Nawawi Ahmad in Germany last November.

Since then, the post has been temporarily helmed by the division’s deputy chief Nor Saidi Nanyan.

The source also told Utusan Malaysia that that it has not been confirmed if Nor Saidi will remain in the running for the position of the Langkawi Umno division’s deputy chief or challenge Mohd Nazifuddin for the top spot.

“So far, I have been informed that Nor Saidi has yet to submit his nomination form and we will wait until the closing date to determine the post he is contesting in,” said the source to the Malay daily.

On January 29, Mohd Nazifuddin announced that he intends to run for the Umno Youth deputy chief position in the upcoming party election.

The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) secretary general said his main aim and challenge would be to attract more youths to Umno.

  1. What an irony and also humiliation if Najib's son ends up replacing Mahathir in Langkawi.
