Tengku Zafrul ‘unsure’ why summoned by MACC

Former finance minister reiterates he will give his full cooperation.

Former finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz will be called in as part of the anti-graft agency’s probe into the Jana Wibawa programme.

KUALA LUMPUR: Tengku Zafrul Aziz says he is unsure why he has been summoned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), but says he will give his full cooperation to them.

“I can confirm that I have been called by MACC and God willing, I will meet with them as soon as possible,” he told reporters after an event here today.

The international trade and industry minister said he would share more details with the press after he meets with the anti-graft agency.

Yesterday, MACC chief Azam Baki confirmed that Tengku Zafrul, the former finance minister, will be called in as part of the agency’s probe into Jana Wibawa.

Jana Wibawa was a Covid-19 stimulus package for Bumiputera contractors affected by the economic downturn during the pandemic.

Estimated to cost RM600 billion, it had been mired in controversy after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the costs were too high for some of the projects given out, and that they had also not gone through a tender process.

On Saturday, Tengku Zafrul said he had nothing to hide should he be summoned for questioning, saying “I am prepared to give my statement if required”, in an Instagram post.

He had said this in response to former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s claim that the Jana Wibawa stimulus package was mooted by Tengku Zafrul and had been carried out solely by the finance ministry.

Muhyiddin also said MACC might call up Tengku Zafrul for questioning as the project had been proposed and agreed to by the former finance minister.
