PETALING JAYA: Nazifuddin Najib does not consider being the son of former prime minister Najib Razak as an advantage in the race for the post of Umno Youth vice chief.

He admits that the possibility of winning or losing is always there, Bernama reported.

“And I will respect the polling process. I will have to work harder to gain more support,” Nazifuddin was quoted as saying.

He is also said to be vying for the post of Langkawi Umno division chief.

According to Umno Youth secretary Hasmuni Hassan, apart from Nazifuddin, three others have submitted their nomination for the post, namely Ikmal Hazlan Ikmal Hisham, Hairi Mad Shah and Farhan Khairuddin.

In January, Nazifuddin was reported to have said that he hoped to attract more youths to join Umno and strengthen the party in the future when announcing his decision to contest for the post in January.

Apart from Nazifuddin, Najib’s daughter, Nooryana Najwa will be contesting for the Puteri Umno and Lembah Pantai division Puteri chief posts.

Meanwhile, on the race for Umno Youth chief, Hasmuni said four members have joined the contest so far.

They are Dr Akmal Saleh, Syed Rosli Syed Harman Jamalullail, Meor Hassan Mat Ali and Armand Azha Abu Hanifah.

The Umno elections began on Feb 1 and will run until March 18 with branch polls for the committees, Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings slated from Feb 1 to 26.

The divisional elections for the Wanita, Youth and Puteri committees will be held simultaneously nationwide on March 11.

Separately, Umno election committee chairman Shahrir Abdul Samad said as of yesterday, 24 members have submitted their nominations for the 25 seats in the Supreme Council.

Shahrir also said that some 11,369 names have been submitted for various posts from the division to the national level.
