Tian Chua’s dismissal will serve as a lesson for PKR members not to turn their backs on the spirit of cooperation within the party, says analyst Ariff Aizuddin Azlan.

PETALING JAYA: PKR members might start doubting the party’s resolve if it did not sack former vice-president Tian Chua for having stood as an independent candidate for the Batu parliamentary seat in the 15th general election, says an analyst.

Universiti Putra Malaysia’s Izani Zain said if PKR did not boot Tian Chua from the party, other PKR members might feel empowered to also flout the party’s rules for contesting as independents, which automatically sees them lose their membership.

“Sometimes, the party is impacted if those who are fired have influence. However, in this case, Tian Chua lost in GE15, and he should not be a threat to PKR,” he told FMT.

In November, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, who described Tian Chua’s decision to contest as an independent as “disappointing”, said it was PKR’s policy to automatically sack such members, when asked what action the party would take.

According to PKR disciplinary committee chairman Tan Yee Kew, the decision to officially sack Tian Chua was reached during the party’s central leadership committee meeting last Saturday.

Tian Chua was sacked together with four other party members for contesting against Pakatan Harapan in GE15 and in the Sarawak state election in December 2021, either as independents or on the ticket of other parties.

The other four are Puah Chee Haur (Parit Buntar), Ahmad Tarmizi Ghazali (Gopeng), M Mohganan (Taiping) and Nur Khairunisa Abdullah (Sadong Jaya).

Another analyst, Ariff Aizuddin Azlan of Universiti Teknologi Mara, said Tian Chua’s dismissal would serve as a political lesson for other party members not to turn their backs on the spirit of cooperation within the party.

He said that as an “old timer” in the party’s struggle, Tian Chua should have tried to help P Prabakaran defend the Batu seat as the PH candidate in GE15.

Tian Chua has been a staunch supporter of the “reformasi” movement since 1998 after Anwar was sacked from the government and later arrested.

The former two-term Batu MP clashed with Prabakaran and eight other candidates in GE15. He lost his deposit after obtaining only 4,603 votes.
