Hishammuddin ready to contest Umno's top posts
Former Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein has expressed his readiness to contest one of the party's top positions.
Speaking to reporters this afternoon, the Sembrong MP, however, played coy on which position he plans to run for, saying that he wants to see first if it will be open for competition.
"We have to wait for this Umno general assembly to make its resolution first.
“If it decided that the positions should be open for contest, then I do not mind considering contesting in the upcoming party election," Hishammuddin (above, right) said when asked for his view on whether Umno's top two posts should be open for competition.
"We wait first if there will be a contest or not.”
The former defence minister was speaking to reporters at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre, where Umno is holding its 2022 general assembly.
He would be the second former party leader who had openly expressed their readiness to participate in the run for top leadership posts in Umno's upcoming party election, which has to be held by May 19 this year.
Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin recently indicated his plan to contest the party president post, should the position be open for competition.
