Appeal to the board, not Anwar, Rafizi tells Tian Chua

Appeal to the board, not Anwar, Rafizi tells Tian Chua

Rafizi Ramli said it was not right for Tian Chua to ask the party president for clemency when the appeals board had the final say.

SHAH ALAM: Tian Chua, who was recently sacked from PKR, should write in to the party’s appeals board to be reinstated instead of pleading with the president, says Rafizi Ramli.

The PKR deputy president said this is because the board had the final say.

“It also does not look right to appeal to the president directly and it will be unfair to those who were sacked before,” Rafizi said in a press conference after the Selangor PKR election convention.

He also said that seeking forgiveness from the president sends the wrong message to other members and reeks of double standards.

“The process must be fair to all and this means having to go through the appeals board.”

Earlier Tian Chua told FMT that he was hoping PKR president Anwar Ibrahim will forgive him for breaching party rules and readmit him into the party.

He has been given 14 days to appeal the sacking, which was due to his move to contest as an independent in the Batu parliamentary seat, against the candidate from Pakatan Harapan (PH), in the recent general election (GE15).

The former two-time Batu MP, a staunch Anwar supporter, admitted he had “no defence” and admitted he had violated the party’s disciplinary rules.

“It’s up to the president whether he will forgive me or not. Anwar could use his power as president to forgive me.

“The issue is clemency, not punishment,” Tian Chua said.

Tian Chua went up against PKR’s P Prabakaran and eight others for the Batu seat, but lost his deposit after obtaining only 4,603 votes.

On Jan 7, PKR’s central leadership council sacked him for contesting without the party’s consent.
