Amanah wants to criminalise racial extremism

AMANAH Negara Party (Amanah) vice president Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusuf said the party wants to criminalise racial extremism in Malaysia, and to make that happen, the party wants to bring forward proposals for the drafting of a National Unity Act.

Mujahid says the proposals will be brought to the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in preparation for the state elections that are to be held soon in several states, including Selangor and Penang, where Pakatan Harapan (PH) is the ruling party.

In the proposal, acts of extremism such as playing on racial issues should be considered criminal acts, said Mujahid.

The political debate in Malaysia has turned sour after the election results were announced on Nov 20, giving the Pakatan Harapan (PH) a narrow win over the Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Social media networks exploded with racial slurs and accusations of betrayal from all sides of the political fence. It worsened after Anwar was appointed Prime Minister, which made the opposition bloc, the PN unhappy.

Mujahid said that racial and religious sentiments were played so badly in the 15th General Election (GE15) campaign and caused the people to make choices not based on facts or policy comparisons.

“But making choices based on sentiments and racial impulses. This is very disappointing and that is why we organise this program so that there is awareness that this matter needs to be addressed.

“We want the people realise that voting in the name of sentiment will not bring the country forward. Of course we are worried, especially in the run-up to state elections, We are worried that they (opposing parties) may use the same tactics (playing with sentiments). This is a big challenge for the country,” Utusan reported him as saying at a a press conference today at the Nadwah Ulama lil Nahdhah Jadidah Convention (NUNJI) 2023.

The former minister in the Prime Minister’s Department also said that such an act to control racial bias and the rise of racism in the country was included in the resolution of the 2023 NUNJI Convention.

He added that this was necessary to help the government in its political will to stop the game of racial and religious sentiments. — Jan 7, 2023
