PETALING JAYA: Two mishaps did not stop Malaysian Soh Wai Ching from winning his 12th consecutive international tower running title in Dubai yesterday.
Despite colliding with another runner and later falling on the staircase at the start of the race, he went on to set a new course record at the Dubai Holding SkyRun.
Running in the elite category, Wai Ching scaled 1,334 stairs at the 52-storey Jumeirah Emirates Towers in 6 minutes, 53 seconds to become the overall champion.
Some 250 competitors from 40 countries, aged 16 to 78, took part in the season-ending race.
Wai Ching said it wasn’t an easy win for him due to the two accidents that set him back a bit.
“When we were running towards the building, another runner crashed into me,” he said. “And when I got to the base of the staircase, there was a mat on which I slipped and fell.”
The World No 1 said he was glad that he won his first and last race this year in Dubai, where he had lived until last year.
“I want to climb the 10 tallest towers in Dubai over 30 days next year,” he added.
