Rafizi explains PSM snub, says Jeyakumar won under PKR previously

PETALING JAYA: PKR has defended Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) decision not form an electoral alliance with Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) over the Sungai Siput parliamentary seat, arguing that the constituency was won under the PKR banner in the past.
PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli said it was not about giving PSM a chance, but which party had the best chance, including in terms of election machinery.
“In the end, we want to win,” he told reporters here.
Rafizi then cited PSM’s track record when the latter contested under its own banner.
“They lost their deposit,” he said referring to the 2018 polls.
In the 14th general election, PSM chairman Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj lost the seat in a four-cornered fight.
Jeyakumar only managed to get 1,505 votes while PKR’s Kesavan Subramaniam won with 20,817 votes.
Jeyakumar won the seat in 2008 and retained it in the following general election. In both instances, he contested under the PKR banner.
On Sunday, PSM said that it had been shut out of an electoral pact with PH as the party’s request to be allocated a seat had been denied.
PSM had asked to be allowed to contest the Sungai Siput seat. In the event that the request was denied, the party had requested for any parliamentary seat and two state seats.
“The pact is over, but not the struggle,” PSM said in a statement.
Rafizi had previously assured that seats had been allocated to PSM and Muda.
