Let’s be part of the opposition, says Umno Supreme Council member

Umno Supreme Council member Isham Jalil said BN should respect the voters’ wish for them to become part of the opposition.

PETALING JAYA: Umno Supreme Council member Isham Jalil says Barisan Nasional (BN) should be part of the opposition to play a check-and-balance role instead of joining a multi-coalition government.

In a Facebook post, Isham said BN should respect the people’s wishes since they had “chosen” them to be part of the opposition.

“The people’s support had returned to us during our 22 months as part of the opposition after the 2018 general election,” he said.

“However, the trust was broken when we formed a multi-coalition government after the Sheraton Move.”

The Sheraton Move, which saw Bersatu quit Pakatan Harapan and a faction of PKR leaders quit the party, led to the collapse of the PH government in 2020.

Earlier today, Istana Negara told party leaders to form coalitions with parties that have the most number of seats to form the federal government.

In yesterday’s polls, no single coalition managed to secure the minimum 112 majority seats in the Dewan Rakyat.

PH (with Muda) took the lead with 82 seats, followed by Perikatan Nasional (73), Barisan Nasional (30), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (22), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (6), Warisan (3), Parti Bangsa Malaysia (1), Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (1) and two independents.

“Rather than becoming part of the government right now, Umno and Barisan Nasional can rebuild their credibility and regain the people’s trust as part of the opposition,” Isham said.

“We must not be afraid of becoming a strong opposition.”
