Harapan and BN to meet at Seri Pacific tomorrow - coalition sources

Harapan and BN to meet at Seri Pacific tomorrow - coalition sources

Pakatan Harapan and BN leaders are expected to meet at the Seri Pacific Hotel, in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow morning.

Several sources from Harapan and BN confirmed the 10am meeting with Malaysiakini, but declined to divulge the purpose of the meeting.

"I was told there would be a meeting between Harapan and BN leaders," a BN source said.

However, a Harapan source downplayed the gravity of the meeting.

"It's not official, just a regular meeting. It is not wrong if Harapan and BN meet to exchange views after the tiring campaign period," the source said.

The meeting is set to take place four hours before a deadline set by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for prospective prime minister candidates to prove that they have a majority.

Harapan has 82 seats, and BN has 30. Combined they would have an assured simple majority which would not be affected by the outcome of two pending parliamentary seat polls.

Great resistance within BN

However, there is great resistance from within BN to align with Harapan, particularly from those who want BN chief Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to resign over the coalition's worst-ever election performance.

Perikatan Nasional chief Muhyiddin Yassin

Meanwhile, Perikatan Nasional chief Muhyiddin Yassin also claimed to have a majority - believed to be with the support of BN MPs.

Unlike DAP and Amanah, Umno's party rules do not compel rogue MPs who go against party decisions to "resign" - thus, triggering laws meant to prevent defections.

Hence, it is possible for Umno MPs to go against the party position without worrying about losing their seats.

This is despite BN MPs signing a pledge to give Zahid the mandate to negotiate post-election alliances for the coalition.
