PETALING JAYA: Reports that only Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is in support of working with Pakatan Harapan to form the government are not true, according to a source in Barisan Nasional.
The source said forming the government with Perikatan Nasional would see Umno playing “third fiddle” to PAS and Bersatu when it comes to Malay interests. There is fear within Umno that the party wil lose its relevance if this happens, the source said.
The source also said that, contrary to media reports, BN MPs had not signed statutory declarations backing Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister.
“After just two years in Muhyiddin’s government, Umno had already already become so divided with his ‘scheme of things’. Another five years, and Umno will be ‘gone’.
“Some Umno and BN MPs are afraid that having PAS as the leading bloc may not be good for investor and economic confidence. That’s why there is still a dilemma,” the source said.
The phrase “scheme of things” first surfaced in a leaked audio recording allegedly made during a Bersatu Supreme Council meeting in 2020.
In the recording, a man said to be Muhyiddin, is heard proposing that Bersatu shore up its position by joining forces with Umno to form Malaysia’s largest Malay political party, with offers of positions in government-linked companies made to Umno as an incentive.
Yesterday, Muhyiddin said he had received the support of Gabungan Parti Sarawak and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah to form the government and become the prime minister.
He also hinted at having the support of several BN MPs, saying he would show statutory declarations signed by them as proof that PN had enough parliamentary support to form a government.
However, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said BN candidates who won in the general election had signed a pledge and given him the mandate as the coalition’s chairman to determine any political alliance to form a government.
Istana Negara has told party leaders and heads of coalitions to propose a prime ministerial candidate by 2pm today.
BN and Pakatan Harapan leaders are currently in a meeting at the Seri Pacific hotel.
