Asri accuses FMT of ‘provocative’ reports over unilateral conversion

Asri Zainul Abidin made the claims against two news portals in a video posted on his Facebook page.

PETALING JAYA: Perlis mufti Asri Zainul Abidin has accused FMT and Malaysiakini of publishing “provocative” reports on the unilateral conversion of Loh Siew Hong’s three children.

Asri, however, failed to provide any specific examples of the alleged provocative reports when levelling the claims against the two portals in a video posted on his Facebook page.

In the video, Asri, who is popularly known as Dr Maza, said “we know who controls them”, in reference to FMT and Malaysiakini.

He went on to say that “their news is provocative and touches on sensitive issues. They showed photos of the kids and they are releasing all sorts of news.

“All sorts of news… they want to provoke….”

Asri however did not elaborate further.

From FMT’s perspective, the unilateral conversion of Loh’s three children is of national interest and one which has received widespread media coverage.

Over the past two weeks, FMT had reported on Loh’s plight and comments made by various quarters, including by Asri himself, where he explained that the children’s conversion was carried out legally and in accordance with Perlis law.

Asri’s explanation that the children’s father had given his permission for them to convert to Islam, and that they did so voluntarily, was also reported by FMT.

This portal had also reported Asri as saying that he felt the main issue at hand was ensuring that the faith of Loh’s children was defended if they wanted to remain Muslims.

In addition, FMT had also published the views of several parties on a landmark Federal Court decision in 2018 which stated that the conversion of any child under 18 to another religion required the consent of both parents.

The views of law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, MPs, political party leaders as well as NGOs on the court’s decision were also reported by FMT.

FMT had also published a story in which Penang mufti Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor explained his stance on the unilateral conversion of Loh’s children.

  1. Asri is really a dangerous man - he is willing to raise provocative and dangerous issues just to justify his stance.

And nobody in government is reining him in.
