Why quit if Xavier did no wrong, says PKR’s Abdullah Sani

Why quit if Xavier did no wrong, says PKR’s Abdullah Sani

PKR central council member Abdullah Sani Hamid questions Xavier Jayakumar’s reasons for leaving.

PETALING JAYA: A member of PKR’s central leadership, Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid, has questioned why Kuala Langat MP Xavier Jayakumar resigned from the party to support the Perikatan Nasional government of Muhyiddin Yassin.

Sani, who is MP for Kapar, said in a posting on Twitter that “if Xavier did no wrong, he could have challenged the accusations. But what does it mean for him to give up?”

His tweet was shared by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, who was among the 246 who retweeted the posting.

However, another senior PKR member, Sivarasa Rasiah, defended Xavier, saying on Facebook: “It is obvious to all and sundry that Xavier would not have done this if not for the selective investigation initiated by the MACC targeted to intimidate him.”

He said several of Xavier’s associates and former ministry staff had been arrested and remanded by the MACC.

Sivarasa urged the PN government to stop the abuse of enforcement agencies through selective investigations to intimidate opposition MPs and pressure them to switch sides.

Xavier, one of the founding members of the party, resigned as PKR vice-president today and said he would be an independent MP supporting the government.

He said he had “grown extremely frustrated” over the events of the past year. He did not say what these events were but made reference to the push for a snap general election.

However, Sani said in his tweet that “the question of disappointment with the party is just political rhetoric”.

Earlier today, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had said that a “senior minister” had told Xavier to support PN or face serious consequences. Saifuddin said Xavier had told the party leadership that he had been made a “target” of a plethora of investigations.

Another party comrade, Tian Chua, paid tribute to Xavier’s services to the party, saying it would be unfair to regard him as a traitor.

Xavier and Tian Chua were among those who supported former deputy president Azmin Ali in the party elections in 2018. Azmin left in March last year and is now with PPBM and a senior minister in the Perikatan Nasional government.

Last month, two other MPs, Larry Sng and Steven Choong, left PKR and declared their support for Muhyiddin.
