PETALING JAYA: A Kuala Lumpur DAP leader has called on party members in the Cabinet to resign in the event that former prime minister Najib Razak, who is currently serving time for a graft conviction, is pardoned.
Ben Fong said it would be “untenable” for DAP to remain in government if Najib is released.
“This is a red line that we cannot cross,” Fong, the Kuala Lumpur DAP treasurer, said in a statement.
It was reported that the Federal Territories Pardons Board (FTPB) is expected to meet tomorrow to consider, among other matters, Najib’s bid for a pardon of his convictions linked to the 1MDB scandal.
Najib, 72, was convicted six years ago of misappropriating RM42 million in SRC International funds. He was fined RM210 million and handed a 12-year jail term which he has been serving at Kajang prison since August 2022.
The FTPB later halved his prison term to six years and reduced the fine to RM50 million.
In December 2025, Najib was convicted of abuse of power and money laundering involving over RM2 billion linked to 1MDB. He was sentenced to 15 years’ jail and fined RM11.38 billion. He is appealing the conviction.
Fong said that leaving the Cabinet did not necessarily mean bringing down the government.
He said DAP could continue supporting the government from outside the Cabinet to preserve political stability and push for institutional reforms.
“But stability cannot become an excuse for accepting everything. Political leaders must recognise that some lines cannot be crossed.”

Given the near certainty of the overwhelming Malay "vote DAP out" movement at the next GE, DAP must take the YOLO ( You Only Live Once) route in the remaining 1 year or so of this Government.
