Gaza’s Nasser Medical Complex faces surgical overload with 11 theatres for 5,000-plus operations
Health authorities say Gaza’s Nasser Medical Complex is “under huge operational pressure”, with doctors performing more than 5,065 surgeries in the first half of 2026.
In a statement, the Ministry of Health said the figure represents a “double challenge” for the hospital as it only has 11 functional operating rooms and 735 beds to handle hundreds of incoming cases.
Of the total figure, 4,234 were scheduled procedures that faced waiting-list backlogs, while 831 were emergency interventions requiring immediate response, it said.
The World Health Organization has meanwhile warned that only 17 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals remain even partially functional, with Nasser, Al-Shifa, and Al-Amal among the few major referral facilities still operating .
The director of Al-Shifa Medical Complex in the Gaza Strip, Muhammad Abu Salmiya said on Wednesday that the health system in the Strip is sliding toward “complete collapse”. He said that hospitals are operating at an occupancy rate exceeding 130 percent.
