Ramasamy joins the chorus dumbfounded over Maimunah’s sudden removal as first woman KL mayor

MAYOR of Kuala Lumpur Datuk Seri Maimunah Sharif service was abruptly terminated and she has been transferred to PETRONAS as the national oil corporation’s property advisor.

Before she was appointed as the 15th Kuala Lumpur mayor based in the KL City Hall (DBKL), she served as the under-secretary in the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN Habitat) in Nairobi, Kenya.

Prior to this, Maimumah who is a qualified urban planner was both the mayor of Penang city council and president of the Sebarang Perai Municipal Council.

During her term of service in Penang, Maimunah proved to be competent and professional public official.

While I was in the state government, I had consulted her on various issues including Hindu temple relocations. I found her to be polite, sensitive and fair in her decisions.

Datuk Seri Maimunah Sharif clocked out as the KL mayor yesterday (Nov 14) to join PETRONAS as the national oil corporation’s property advisor

I was surprised that she was transferred to PETRONAS despite not completing her full term.

I contacted her when the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple Hindu temple in Jalan Masjid India was forced to re-locate by none other than Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim earlier this year. I understand why she was not able to contact me.

‘Unsuspectingly stepped on wrong toes’

I still have great respect for Maimunah on the basis that there could not be a better mayor than her for the KL City Hall given her experience in local government administration and international exposure.

Maimunah was transferred hastily before her full potential could be exploited and such transfer had nothing to do with her performance or non-performance.

Although I do not know the actual reason for her transfer to a position that has nothing related to her credentials in PETRONAS, I suspect that she without realising might have stepped on the toes of some powerful individuals in the country.

These powerful people might not have been pleased by the fair and impartial approach that Maimunah exercised on developments matters in and around the Federal capital.

Anwar must explain to the public as to why Maimunah was replaced hastily. I certainly agree that it about time for the introduction of local elections in the country especially for the city councils in the country. – Nov 15, 2025
