CONTROVERSIAL rapper Namewee said he did everything he could to save Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh but was unable to.

"First time I saw someone die in front of me. I was helpless and shocked and did everything I could to save her.

"The picture will forever stay in my mind," Namewee whose real name is Wee Meng Chee said in a Facebook post.

In his first post after being released from police detention pending investigations into Hsieh's death, he said his nine-days in the police lock-up was the longest he ever experienced.

"On the first and second days, I was questioned by six police investigation teams for more than eight hours a day.

"The longest session was 15 hours," he said.

He said the police teams used different methods to record his statements.

“They recorded my statement using various methods and employed various technological tools to conduct a thorough investigation. Their work was meticulous and highly professional,” he said.

Namewee also urged the public not to judge others based solely on their line of work and to stop all forms of cyberbullying.

Police detained Namewee on Nov 5 after investigations revealed that he was the last person seen with the 31-year-old victim in a hotel room in Kuala Lumpur at about 1.40pm on October 22.

The police had reclassified Hsieh’s death as murder after initially classifying the case as a sudden death.

On Wednesday, Malaysia’s Attorney General Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said there was no evidence linking Namewee to Hsieh’s death and he would be released on police bail. - November 15, 2025
