In her quest to reunite with her missing daughter, M Indira Gandhi has implored former chief justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat to join an upcoming “justice march” on Nov 22.

On an emotional note, Indira urged Tengku Maimun to join her “as a sister, a woman, a mother, and a symbol of truth.”

“If you could walk beside me, even for a few steps, it would mean more than words can express.

“For me, it would be the day when justice and humanity finally meet on the same road,” she said.

For the record, Tengku Maimun (above, left) was the sole dissenting judge when the Court of Appeal, in 2014, quashed a mandamus order by the Ipoh High Court to compel the police to locate Indira’s children, who were taken away and converted by her ex-husband, Riduan Abdullah.

On April 29, 2016, the Federal Court allowed Indira’s appeal to reinstate the mandamus order issued by the Ipoh High Court compelling the police to execute the warrant of committal against Riduan.

The five-person bench, chaired by Raus Sharif, found the committal order against Riduan to be justified as he failed to bring Prasana Diksa, the couple’s youngest child, to the jurisdiction of the court.

Indira’s cases on the unilateral conversion of her children came to an end on Jan 29, 2018, when the Federal Court ruled that the consent of both parents was needed to change the faith of a child.

In January this year, Tengku Maimun said there is a need to correct misunderstandings about Islam, even among Muslims.

Citing Indira’s case, she said there was no basis or justification in Islam, as she understood it, to deprive a child of her mother or a mother of her child.

“When we speak about Islam, it is all about justice. It (the religion) does not teach us to look at the colour or the religion of someone. Social justice is paramount in Islam,” she stressed.

Meanwhile, extolling Tengku Maimun’s influence in alleviating her ordeal, Indira said she almost lost faith in recovering her daughter until the former Federal Court judge’s courage brought a ray of hope.

“That day, you reminded the whole nation that justice still lives in Malaysia.

“You restored not only my hope as a helpless mother but the dignity of every parent who believes that the law must protect, not divide,” Indira added.

‘Justice undelivered’

The justice march is to protest the authorities’ perceived inaction in locating Prasana. It is scheduled to start from the Sogo Shopping Complex to Bukit Aman in Kuala Lumpur.

The Indira Gandhi Action Team (Ingat), in collaboration with Agamam Ani Malaysia, announced that the “peaceful and lawful” march will feature Indira handing over to the police a teddy bear which belonged to Prasana.

“Indira will be pushing Prasana’s stroller, filled with her daughter’s toys and clothes, as a silent yet powerful message that, despite Federal Court orders, promises, and repeated assurances from authorities, Prasana remains unrepatriated, and justice remains undelivered.

“The march symbolises the failure of enforcement, erosion of institutional accountability, and the silent suffering of countless parents denied justice due to bureaucratic inaction,” said activist Arun Dorasamy.
