The whistleblower at the heart of an alleged corruption scandal has filed a police report, claiming that he received a death threat.

According to the report, lodged last night, he had received a WhatsApp call from an unidentified foreign number.

“During the 16-second phone call, a man threatened me in Chinese saying he was from a ‘hired killer group’ and had been instructed to kill me within 24 hours if I did not shut up. He said this was my final warning.

“The caller also sent me photographs of guns and bullets as well as a photo of a man shot lying on the road.

“I am very afraid. I fear for my safety and the safety of my family,” read the report, which Malaysiakini sighted.

The whistleblower also sent the images he received to Malaysiakini.

The photo of the man shot was that of former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, who was fatally gunned down during an election campaign event in 2022.

In light of the threat, the whistleblower requested Malaysiakini not to mention which police station the report was lodged with as it would reveal his location.

Alleged bribes

The whistleblower has been making headlines since Saturday after Malaysiakini reported that he claimed to have eight videos of state assemblypersons discussing money.

He claimed that these were bribes given in exchange for their support for a project in the state.

Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported that the whistleblower, via the legal firm Izwan Mazniza Kamil and Associates, sent a letter to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim requesting his intervention with regard to his request for protection and legal immunity under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010.

On Saturday, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki urged the whistleblower to lodge a report but stated that the commission cannot furnish a black-and-white guarantee that he would not be investigated or charged without detailed information.

He said the law states that when the individual provides the information to the authorities, he or she is protected under the law, but this could be revoked if it is found that the individual is involved in the offence.
