China to celebrate Chinese New Year in Malaysia next year
By CS Ming
China has chosen Malaysia as the host for the first-ever Chinese New Year celebration to be held outside the Great Wall country.
The Minister of Tourism Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, said this was announced during a meeting with China’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Sun Yeli, at the China International Travel Mart in Shanghai.
He also announced that the famous Chinese New Year celebration, filled with Chinese traditions, will be held abroad for the first time on 23 January, coinciding with the ‘Little New Year’.
According to him, Malaysia has been selected as the host country, and preparations are currently underway.
“The Chinese side has also begun finalising the list of performers and urged Malaysia to provide support and maximise the promotional campaign,” he said in a post on Facebook on Tuesday.
At the same time, Tiong noted that Yeli described the deep cultural ties between the two countries, which will highlight China’s active efforts to industrialise the cultural sector.
In this regard, he suggested that both countries explore joint development in this field.
“Drawing inspiration from China’s cultural advancements, Malaysia aims to achieve greater success in the future,” he added.
Commenting on the successful inscription of the “Wangkang Festival” on the UNESCO ICH heritage list in 2020, King Sing said Malaysia and China will collaborate again this year.
He explained that this would coincide with the 50th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations, with the nomination of the lion dance for recognition as an Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) by UNESCO.
In the same post, King Sing also shared that he had met with the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism of South Korea, Yu In Chon.
He stated that South Korea and Malaysia will jointly host the ASEAN-Korea Music Festival (ROUND Festival 2025).
“Meanwhile, South Korea will establish a cultural centre in Kuala Lumpur next year to mark the 65th anniversary of Malaysia-South Korea diplomatic relations, further promoting cultural exchanges.
“In this discussion, I expressed Malaysia’s readiness to take more proactive steps and create a cooperation platform to foster deeper cultural and artistic exchanges with both China and South Korea,” he explained. —Nov 27, 2024
