Nurul Izzah spotted with her dad in Peru sparks furore despite being there in private capacity

HAVING lambasted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his eagerness to exchange handshakes with Peruvian President Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra, pro-opposition keyboard warriors are seemingly training their guns on former Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar for tailing her father in his latest trip to Lima, Peru.

This came about after one of the photos shared by the PM’s political secretary Datuk Ahmad Farhan Fauzi on the X platform shows Nurul Izzah joining the Round Table Meeting with industry and business leaders from South America which was chaired by PMX.

The event, according to Farhan, was intended to introduce investment and trade opportunities in Malaysia, especially in the fields of energy transition, sustainability and halal certification to Latin America industry players.

“What position does Izzah have in the government to be able to participate in the round table meeting?” fumed Mu.Adib  (@adib_zzz) in response to Farhan’s post.

“Parliament is in session. Can MPs pose questions about Puan Nurul Izzah’s involvement in PMX’s official visit to Peru?” demanded illiFadli™(@IlliFadli) also in response to Farhan’s post.

“We should normalise questions from the rakyat to be answered in the House of Parliament, recorded in the Hansard and become a reference for the future. That’s more systematic.”

And this sarcastic post from ymarcus (@youngmarcusmn): “What’s wrong with Nurul Izzah going to Peru? Nurul Zahid (referring to Deputy PM Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s daughter Datuk Nurulhidayah Ahmad Zahid) also went with his father to China . Relax guys! This is the Madani (government).”

More broadly, another video shared by opposition-slant political activist Ratu Naga stated that this is not the first time that Nurul Izzah who is also the Secretariat of the Special Advisory Body to the Minister of Finance (ACFIN) co-chairperson was seen alongside PMX in his overseas trip.

Aside from Peru, the said video also showed glimpses of the PKR vice-president spotted with her dad in his recent working visit to Egypt (prior to leaving for Peru). In short, the brief clip questioned Nurul Izzah’s participation in events and official government delegation abroad.

Thankfully, a check by FocusM shows that Nurul Izzah’s very presence in Lima is coincidental at best for she was there in a private capacity.

The eldest child of PMX’s six children has penned on her Facebook page on Nov 9 that she would be leaving for Egypt that morning “for a working visit to Egypt, Peru & G20 Brazil”.

“The official delegation comprised well-known Malaysian entrepreneurs as well as other small and medium industry entrepreneurs,” she shared.

“Representing the Social & Economic Research Initiative (SERI), I’ll meet with the Third World Network (TWN) as well as The Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Al Azhar University with the participation of Think City.”

Recall that PMX had stated on Sept 20 that all projects, trips and tasks abroad involving government ministries, companies and agencies must be referred to their respective ministry secretaries-general as well as department heads and approved by the ministers.

The decision to require ministerial approval was made because some boards within government companies and agencies appeared to be making decisions in their own interests.

This followed the decision by PMX who is also the Finance Minister to personally cancelled an application involving a ministry and government agency which had registered 68 staff members to attend a small exhibition in Paris. – Nov 17, 2024
