PETALING JAYA
Selangor Bersatu chief Azmin Ali has downplayed a news report claiming that he would spurn an offer by the party to make him its secretary-general.

The former Selangor menteri besar said it was

still too early
 to decide on the offer.

It’s still too early as it is a long way to go before the polls,
he told FMT, referring to the Bersatu elections in October.

I will discuss with the president and heed his advice.

Yesterday, quoting sources, FMT reported that Azmin told several division leaders he would turn down the offer as he wanted to focus on helping Perikatan Nasional wrest Selangor from Pakatan Harapan in the next general election.

Sources also said Azmin was not keen on a

downgrade
in view of the fact that he is a former PKR deputy president.

On July 13, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said Azmin would be offered the post, given his ability and political experience.

He said current secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin would be given the deputy president’s post in recognition of his contributions as PN secretary-general and opposition leader in Parliament.

On Tuesday, Sinar Harian reported Azmin as saying he wanted to meet Muhyiddin about the offer. He also said the former prime minister was aware of his stance.

It was previously reported that Azmin was only seeking a spot on the party’s Supreme Council.
