PKR Youth: Govt needs to show more empathy over Teoh Beng Hock

PKR Youth has expressed its concern over the authorities’ reaction to the peaceful rally to submit a memorandum related to the late Teoh Beng Hock yesterday.

Calling the reaction “worrying”, PKR Youth communications director Haziq Azfar Ishak said in a statement the authorities must react with courtesy and empathy on this issue.

“Although the authorities follow procedure, it should be implemented based on openness, courtesy, and empathy in line with the Madani government’s values.

“This government not only needs to be open but also should be clearly seen to be open in celebrating the convergence of views as a democratic country,” he said today.

Yesterday a brief altercation broke out during the final leg of the Walk of Justice organised by the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement before the group could reach the Parliament gates.

Police intercepted the group led by Beng Hock’s sister Lee Lan, with a human barrier formation 100m from the gates at about 10am.

High-handed response

A run-in ensued as the group insisted on submitting their memorandum at the gates of Parliament and eventually at 11.20am, the speaker's office sent its special officer Abdulhadi Khalid to receive the memorandum.

Following the submission, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim gave an assurance that he would meet the group soon and review the memorandum.

The group has reportedly been trying to see him ever since he took office.

“Anwar’s openness and readiness to meet and examine the demands of the Teoh family is a good example and deserves to be emulated,” Haziq added.

Beng Hock died while under MACC custody on July 16, 2009.

The aide to then-DAP assemblyperson for Seri Kembangan, Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on the fifth-floor service corridor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after being questioned overnight on the 14th floor of the then Selangor MACC headquarters.
