PAS continues push to regain Nenggiri from Bersatu

PAS is pushing to get the Nenggiri seat back from Bersatu, ahead of the by-election in the Kelantan state constituency.

According to its women’s chief Nuridah Mohd Salleh, a candidate from the Islamist party will not switch alliances once elected, as the incumbent lawmaker from Bersatu had done.

“The constituents are disappointed with the betrayal of the incumbent assemblyperson (Mohd Azizi Abu Naim) who voiced support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim last November.

“The disappointment does not only involve Azizi, but also the other five MPs and an assemblyperson who won their seats on the Perikatan Nasional ticket, but ended up backing the government,” Harakahdaily quoted Nuridah (above) as saying.

This comes after PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin’s statement that his party Bersatu will re-contest the Nenggiri seat, which the Election Commission (EC) has declared vacant.

Previously, Gua Musang PAS Youth chief Mohd Habidin Hanipa also said PAS has many worthy candidates to contest in Nenggiri.

Elaborating, Nuridah noted that 90 percent of the PN machinery in Nenggiri comprises PAS members or supporters, and therefore, it is only fair for them to be given a chance to “redeem” the seat.

“Nenggiri voters should be convinced that the candidate they choose has an unwavering stance and that past mistakes will not be repeated.

“Bersatu should embrace this suggestion as a sign of friendship in PN, and to ensure that the Nenggiri state seat does not fall into the hands of the opposition.”

‘Won’t cause rift in PN’

PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin said negotiations between PAS and Bersatu on the Nenggiri candidate are ongoing.

He hoped that the talks will not lead to a rift in PN, of which both parties are components.

“PAS is prepared to contest the seat, and I believe talks on the matter are not an issue big enough to cause a rift between the two parties.

“We are confident that leaders from both parties will sort the matter out. Take into account each party’s willingness and readiness before choosing the most suitable candidate,” Hashim told Harakahdaily.

On June 19, Kelantan state assembly speaker Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah announced that the Nenggiri seat fell vacant after a written notice was received under Clause (3) of Article 31A of the Kelantan state constitution concerning incumbent representative Azizi’s membership status.

Azizi filed an injunction at the Kuala Lumpur High Court to halt the Nenggiri by-election but his bid was denied.

Subsequently, the EC announced Aug 17 as the polling day for the Nenggiri by-election.

Nenggiri is one of the three state constituencies under the Gua Musang parliamentary constituency. The other two are Paloh and Galas.

Azizi won Nenggiri in last year’s state election with an 810-vote majority over BN candidate Ab Aziz Yusoff. The seat used to be a stronghold of Umno-BN.

Aside from Nenggiri, Azizi won the Gua Musang parliamentary seat in the last general election with a slim 163-vote majority over Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

Umno has named Tengku Razaleigh as the election director for the Nenggiri by-election.
