Kedah asked to release
water into Sungai Muda as
levels drop
The Penang Water Supply Corporation says this would prevent major issues at water treatment plants in Kedah and Penang.
In a statement, the concessionaire said the water level of Sungai Muda on Penang’s side had dropped below 2m for four days in a row, leading to concerns about the state’s water supply.
Sungai Muda is Penang’s primary raw water source and makes up more than 80% of PBAPP’s raw water supply, while the Muda and Beris dams, both located in Kedah, release water into the river.
PBAPP said the water reserves at the Muda dam had been depleted and stood at 25.7% capacity as of last Friday, while the reported level at the Beris dam was 82.4% on Thursday.
However, PBAPP said it was drawing water from the expanded Mengkuang dam (EMD) in Seberang Perai to
.sustain good water supply services
“Kedah has the option of releasing more water from the Beris dam to increase the level of Sungai Muda.
This measure will avoid any major issues at 14 water treatment plants (WTPs) in Kedah and the Sungai Dua WTP in Penang.
PBAPP also said that with the supply of water from EMD, the low river levels should not pose an immediate threat to Penang’s water supply.
it said, asking consumers to be more conservative in their use of water. However, PBAPP is operating on high alert and carefully monitoring the status of Sungai Muda,
