PETALING JAYA
A Johor DAP leader has proposed the formation of royal academies for five medical specialities to assess locally trained specialists.

Dr Boo Cheng Hau said the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and health ministry should consider forming royal academies in the fields of family medicine, internal medicine, child health, surgery, and obstetrics and gynaecology.

He said the academies should work with advanced countries to achieve

mutual recognitions, which could ease the exchange of expertise and knowledge in the future
.

(This effort would) upgrade Malaysia to be an international hub for medical education and research,
the former Skudai assemblyman said in a statement.

Royal academies are prestigious institutions focused on the advancement of knowledge and culture. The UK-based Royal Academy of Arts and Royal Academy of Engineering are two such institutions.

Boo’s suggestions follow recent amendments to the Medical Act 1971, which will clarify and reinforce the powers of the MMC and health ministry regarding medical accreditation and licensing.

He was previously reported to have said that the higher education ministry and Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) lack the specific expertise required to oversee such matters effectively.

Boo also proposed implementing a joint centre-collegiate licensing examination for both undergraduate and postgraduate medical graduates to enhance the quality of medical education to international standards.

The Medical Act 1971 Amendment Bill 2024 was passed in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday after it was tabled for its second and third readings.

The amendments aimed to ensure that the parallel pathways and master’s programmes run concurrently.

  1. Over 200 years, Britain built up a world wide reputation for medical education and training via no-nonsense standards and independence.

The "Royal" status of the academies was part of their independence.

That kind of independent, uncompromising maintenance of the highest standards is impossible in Ketuanan Melayu land.
