Challenge Zahid for Umno presidency, Isham tells Tok Mat

Challenge Zahid for Umno presidency, Isham tells Tok Mat

Former Umno supreme council member Isham Jalil has advised deputy president Mohamad Hasan to contest for the party’s presidency.

Many of Umno’s grassroots would support such a move as they do not want to be associated with sitting president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, he claimed.

“I want to tell Tok Mat (Mohamad), why do you want to contest for the deputy presidency?

“Go straight to contesting against Zahid, contest the presidency, Tok Mat,” he said.

Isham (above) urged Mohamad to pave the way for Umno to leave the coalition government and join other former party members who had left.

Umno should not wait too long before making its decision as it would split Malay votes if it were to choose to contest against Harapan and Perikatan Nasional in the 16th general election (GE16), he added.

“Tok Mat, if you want to follow, make the decision now to exit the unity government and join us,” he said.

Earlier today, Mohamad said Umno may not necessarily cooperate with other coalitions in GE16.

But this contradicts Zahid’s statement on June 30, which indicated that BN’s electoral cooperation with Pakatan Harapan will continue in GE16.

In addition, Isham claimed that the coalition government will redraw electoral boundaries before GE16 in DAP strongholds so that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim can maintain his rule.

“Damansara, from one parliamentary constituency, will become three parliamentary constituencies, maybe,” he said.

He was speaking at the Gelombang Selamatkan Malaysia event at Kolej Universiti Islam Zulkifli Muhammad in Gombak, Selangor.

About 200 people were in attendance at the ceramah.

‘Speaker’s decision was wrong’

Another speaker at the event, Perikatan Nasional Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, claimed that a government MP had disagreed with the decision Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul had made regarding six former Bersatu MPs.

He did not name the lawmaker but hinted that the individual was Chinese by citing he was told in a Chinese accent.

“There is a government MP, I don’t want to say their name.

“For them, the speaker’s decision in vacating the six seats should not have been done,” the Alor Setar MP said.

On June 20, Bersatu submitted a notice to Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul informing of vacancies in six parliamentary seats after the party terminated their memberships. This came after the six MPs went rogue by pledging support for Anwar against the party’s wishes.

The six are Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), and Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang).

Despite this, Johari declared the six MPs do not need to vacate their seats.

In a letter sighted by Malaysiakini, Johari argued the rule Bersatu used to forfeit the memberships of the MPs had violated their constitutional rights and the Parliament rule that guaranteed their freedom to speak, debate, and vote.

Anwar had blamed the legal loophole enabling the defection on the opposition, saying that when the anti-hopping rules were added to the constitution in 2022, Bersatu rejected a clause where MPs sacked from their parties would have lost their seats.
