PETALING JAYA: The army will propose that the defence ministry cancel the lease of four Sikorsky Black Hawk helicopters because of the delay in their delivery.

On April 16, army chief Hafizuddeain Jantan said the army would take action if the contractor failed to deliver the first Black Hawk helicopter by the end of April.

Speaking to reporters today, Hafizuddeain stressed that the army urgently requires the helicopters to carry out operational tasks and training.

“If the contractor still fails to meet their obligation by (the end of) May, then the army will propose to the ministry that the lease be cancelled so that we can move forward.

“We require these helicopters urgently, and will be firm in our decision (to propose that the lease be cancelled),” Bernama quoted him as telling reporters after attending an event at the army’s basic training centre in Port Dickson today.

In May last year, the defence ministry signed a RM187 million deal with Aerotree Defence and Services Sdn Bhd to lease the four helicopters for five years. The helicopters are for the army air corps.

Yesterday, defence minister Khaled Nordin said the army will consider cancelling or reopening the tender for the four helicopters if the contractor is unable to deliver them.

“When it truly cannot be fulfilled, that’s when we’ll decide whether to cancel or reopen the tender. All actions will be taken within the terms of the contract,” he said.

  1. The long standing policy of awarding defence contracts to politically connected entitled local shell companies is a recipe for corruption and failure.
