Grassroots want situation in Penang DAP to ‘cool down’, says ex-rep

Ex-assemblyman and executive councillor Phee Boon Poh says party members want DAP to focus on more important issues, such as the cost of living.

Former Penang executive councillor Phee Boon Poh said there was too much politicking in the country.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A former Penang executive councillor and DAP assemblyman says the party’s grassroots want political tensions in the state to ease.

“We have already sent a message (to the leadership), ‘Cool down, take a step back and see the bigger picture,” Phee Boon Poh told reporters here after an event.

“Everybody looks to the party and we want the party to concentrate on more important things,” he said, adding this included social issues and the cost of living.

Phee, who is a former Sungai Puyu assemblyman, added that there was too much politicking in the country.

He was asked about the sentiment among the DAP grassroots over the political tensions in Penang.

Recently, Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow claimed there was an apparent move to oust him as chief minister. He said there were people within and outside the party that wanted to “defeat” him.

DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng then urged Chow to furnish proof of the alleged plot.

Chow subsequently backtracked on his claim about the plot, saying he merely spoke about how things were before the recent state elections.

Phee also said both Chow and Lim were popular among the grassroots.

“Both have brought DAP to a higher level,” he added.
