Fahmi to contact TikTok over censorship of Palestinian content

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said he has contacted the operator of TikTok following complaints by netizens that there is censorship of Palestinian content.

He explained that some users on the social media platform had raised issues that contents containing the word “Hamas” or specific words were automatically taken down.

“There was one user who stated that he had put up a status at 1.20am but it was then taken down at 1.21am because it was said to be a violation of the community guidelines.

“For this issue, I have contacted TikTok to get an explanation.

“But its explanation, to me, was not satisfactory. So, I will probably ask for guidance from Wisma Putra on some matters and will call (the TikTok operator),” the Lembah Pantai MP told reporters.

He said this after attending the rally at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur today in support of the Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Fahmi confirmed that the Facebook application does not have any censorship like TikTok.

“I have personally received a message that the was censorship from Facebook or its operator Meta. When I consulted with Meta's Southeast Asia region (office), they said it was false and did not come from Facebook or Meta.

“Currently, there are no restrictions (like TikTok) on Facebook,” he added.

Further, he said his ministry may be holding a briefing session with media practitioners sometime this coming week.

This, he said, was to provide explanations on certain matters.
