FMT:
Muhyiddin, Dr M will reconcile – but not yet, says Bersatu man
The party’s information chief says Muhyiddin Yassin supports Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Malay Proclamation, nonetheless.
Muhyiddin Yassin was described by Dr Mahathir Mohamad as a traitor after leading the Sheraton Move of February 2020.
PETALING JAYA: Although Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin supports Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s “Malay Proclamation”, it is not time for the two former prime ministers to reconcile, says a Bersatu leader.
Bersatu information chief Razali Idris said it was common knowledge that the relationship of the two former Umno leaders had undergone a “crisis” in the past.
“But it was just a political crisis, nothing more than that. It’s not the time for them to be reconciled, but that day will come. I will work on that,” he told FMT.
He said Muhyiddin had given the green light for Bersatu leaders to support Mahathir’s proclamation in their personal capacities, adding that they supported the initiative because it was a “Malay agenda”.
“I don’t know what’s in Muhyiddin’s heart, but I don’t see him as opposing what Mahathir is doing. After all, (Mahathir) is the former chairman of Bersatu.”
Razali is among three Bersatu leaders who had signed Mahathir’s “Malay Proclamation”, along with deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu and Supreme Council member Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid.
In 2020, Mahathir had described Muhyiddin as a “traitor” after the Sheraton Move of February that year led to the collapse of the Mahathir-led Pakatan Harapan government. Muhyiddin then took over as prime minister.
However, prior to the general election in November 2022, Mahathir said he was willing to forget Muhyiddin’s betrayal so that Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) and PN could work together to face the elections.
This proposed pact did not materialise and Mahathir failed to defend his seat in Langkawi. The former prime minister has also since quit GTA.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and several other leaders of the Islamic party have also signed Mahathir’s “Malay Proclamation”, which aims to unite the Malay community.
Analysts have said the collaboration of Hadi and Mahathir could set a “new narrative” and affect Muhyiddin’s voice in championing the Malay-Muslim community.
But Razali maintained that there was no such thing, pointing out that Bersatu leaders had actually signed the document before PAS leaders did.
“There’s no such thing as Hadi leaving Muhyiddin,” he said, describing such claims as aimed at tarnishing the relationship between PAS and Bersatu.
