You’ve no right to talk about democracy, PH MP tells Hamzah

You’ve no right to talk about democracy, PH MP tells Hamzah

Sim Tze Tzin reminds Hamzah Zainudin that the latter had ordered the police to bar opposition MPs from entering Parliament in August 2021.

PH MP Sim Tze Tzin accused opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin of having acted in an authoritarian manner in August 2021.

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin (PN-Larut) was slammed by a Pakatan Harapan MP for “preaching” about democracy despite his “authoritarian” conduct when he was home minister.

While debating the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s address in the Dewan Rakyat, Hamzah claimed that Perikatan Nasional MPs were being subjected to a “political witch-hunt” as they were being slandered and accused of committing wrongdoings.

Hamzah said that such actions contradicted the democratic values espoused by the unity government.

Sim Tze Tzin (PH-Bayan Baru) then interjected by saying that Hamzah should not be preaching about democracy considering his “authoritarian” conduct in August 2021.

Sim said that Hamzah, who was the home minister at the time, had ordered the police to bar opposition MPs from entering Parliament on Aug 2, 2021, which led to a protest at Dataran Merdeka.

At the time, Hamzah said the Parliament building was closed because more than 100 Covid-19 cases had been detected there and he did not want to endanger lives.

“It was not authoritarian. The problem was there were certain groups that wanted to break the rules that had been announced to the rakyat,” Hamzah fired back at Sim.

“(Plus) what is so special about MPs? It is not that I did not allow them to enter the Parliament (building) but it was done due to a certain reason, which was the Covid-19 pandemic at that time.”

Sim, in response, said Hamzah was merely using Covid-19 as an excuse to bar MPs from entering Parliament. He also reminded Hamzah that 69 opposition lawmakers were questioned by the police following the protest.

“Let us be frank. Call a spade a spade in this honourable Dewan.”

Wong Kah Woh (PH-Taiping) then interjected and reminded Hamzah that on the same day the MPs were barred from entering Parliament, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) was holding a proceeding there with health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Wong was the PAC chairman at that time. “This proves that (Covid-19 infection) clusters cannot be used as an excuse to shut down Parliament on that day,” said the DAP MP.

PN has come under the spotlight recently following revelations by Anwar that vaccine procurement was not done by the book and that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission was investigating the son-in-law of Muhyiddin Yassin over the National Integrated Immigration System contract awarded to him.
