PETALING JAYA: PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has called on the deputy president, Rafizi Ramli, to stop talking about the party’s candidate selection process for the 15th general election in public.

Commenting on Rafizi’s statement yesterday that he and party president Anwar Ibrahim had different views about candidate selection, Saifuddin urged Rafizi to avoid making public statements about the reasons or arguments behind such decisions.

“The party has made its decision. Respect and comply (with it),” Saifuddin told Malaysiakini.

“The candidates have been finalised. That was the decision made together, a party decision.

“Not every internal party discussion needs to be publicised. The party process should be respected.”

Rafizi had said he had recommended that PKR retain R Sivarasa as its candidate for the Sungai Buloh parliamentary seat, but Anwar had a different view on the matter.

He said while the party’s candidate committee, which he is a member of, suggested that Sivarasa be retained because of his track record, “ultimately, the final decision lies with Anwar”.

Sivarasa won the Sungai Buloh seat in the last general election in 2018 with a 26,634-vote majority against PAS’ Nuridah Salleh.

The three-term MP, who lost his voice for almost a year due to thyroid cancer which damaged a nerve in his vocal cords in 2000, admitted today that Anwar chose not to select him for GE15 over concerns about whether he could campaign effectively.

Yesterday, Utusan Malaysia quoted Anwar as saying that Pakatan Harapan’s chances could be affected if Sivarasa campaigned while looking sickly.
